6.42

周之問曰。足下專遵佛跡。無侮道本。吾則心持釋訓業愛儒言。未知足下雅意佛儒安在。為當本一末殊為本末俱異耶。既欲精探彼我方相。究涉理類所關。不得無請。

Zhou's question says: You, sir, exclusively observe the traces of the Buddha and do not slight the root of the Dao. For my part, my mind upholds Śākya's instructions and my vocation cherishes Confucian words. I do not know, in your refined mind, where the Buddha and Confucius stand: are they one in root and different in branches, or are they different in both root and branches? Since I wish to thoroughly probe the mutual aspects of self and other and comprehensively traverse what pertains to principles, I cannot refrain from inquiring.
