Zhang Rong speaks: I have not yet been able to forget my physical form, and thus sentiments remain. Beyond the bounds of the body, physical changes reach their limit, and even when my soul is about to expire, I still leave behind ground for my descendants; I do not wish that the old capital within my square inch of heart be overgrown day and night. Troubled throughout my life by crossing paths and wild grasses, I composed this "Rule of the Gate" in order to regulate my gate. Were it not for the Buddha and the Dao, how could the gate be regulated? Therefore I announce: with breath calm and life trusting the soul to express the Yin, responding to omens through countless sensibilities, I fathom the source and determine the origin. I truly wished you would bring forth my marvelous thoughts; you were indeed able to send across your letter, awakening feelings, insightfully perceiving my upright plea. Since my aspirations have been aroused, I shall now speak for you.
