6.76

周之問曰。足下謂苦下之且藏即色。則虛空有闕矣。足下謂法性以即色圖空。則法性為備矣。今有人於此。操環杖而言法性。鹿巾之士執虛無而來。誚曰。爾不同我吾與爾鬪。足下從容倚棘聽斷於其間曰。皆不可也。謂其鹿巾空負於頭上。環杖自誣於掌中。以足下之精明持達而判訟若斯。良虞芮之所以於邑也。

Zhouzhi asked, saying: "You say that to momentarily hide under suffering while identical with form means empty space has a lack; you say that for the Dharma-nature to seek emptiness while identical with form means the Dharma-nature is complete. Now, suppose there is a man here who holds a looped cane and speaks of the Dharma-nature, while a scholar in a deerskin cap clings to empty non-existence and comes to reproach him, saying: 'You are not the same as me; I will fight with you!' You, sir, leisurely lean against the brambles and arbitrate between them, saying: 'Both of you are wrong.' You claim that the deerskin cap is carried in vain upon the head, and the looped cane deceives itself within the palm. Given your acuity and penetrating reach, sir, to judge lawsuits like this is truly why Yu and Rui were distressed!"
