論曰。樂以迎來哀以送往。此義不假通而自釋。不復費於無用。禮記有言多矣。又云。夫言欺者。謂傷化敗俗耳。苟可以安上治民。復何欺妄之有乎。

[Fan Zhen's] treatise states: 'Joy is used to welcome what arrives; sorrow is used to send off what departs. This meaning clarifies itself without needing explanation, and no further words need be wasted in vain. The Book of Rites speaks abundantly of this.' It also states: 'Deception refers only to harming moral transformation and corrupting customs. If it can secure the ruler and govern the people, what deception or falsehood is there?'
