The six emotional dispositions are also called the six declines, and are likewise termed the six desires. That is to say: the eye receives forms; the ear receives sounds; the nose receives fragrances; the tongue receives flavors; the body receives fine and smooth touch; and the mind receives consciousness. Consciousness here is precisely what was referred to above as the skandha of consciousness. The five skandhas and six desires are indeed the roots of birth and death, and that from which sin and suffering originate. The methods to dispel and regulate them are all fully recorded in the various sūtras.
