Those of penetrating insight agree on goodness, but their thorough discourses distinguish different subjects. First, speaking of the Dao; second, discussing the mind; third, examining principle. Speaking of the Dao takes its root in Heaven; discussing the mind debates it in humanity; examining principle derives it from things. Differentiating them accordingly, their paths are set forth in three; bringing them together in summary, their ultimate arrival can be one. As for the scriptures of profound spirit and the discourses of exhaustive clarity, their meanings embrace the three points and ultimately have no two extremes. Yet because their words emerged from barbarian regions, they are regarded with suspicion by secular scholars; because their events arose among a different folk, they meet with rejection from common sentiments. Heaven's bestowing of the Dao makes no distinction between barbarian and Chinese; how could humanity's endowment of spirit be limited to outer and inner? Reflecting upon it with this single thought, one can dispense with arbitrary conjectures.
