Someone asked: "The instruction of Confucius says, 'Do not seek life so as to harm humaneness,' and also, 'Sacrifice the body to achieve humaneness.' This is the utmost of humaneness, and it is also what the Buddhist scriptures call the practice of a bodhisattva. Laozi made clear the ultimate of non-action, which is the acme of Nirvāṇa. Yet neither ever spoke of spiritual powers or becoming a Buddha. Was it that Confucius and Laozi did not exhaustively know it, or did they, wishing to sway beings with their clear Dao, conceal the reality of attaining the Dao? How could doubts about its lack of reality not arise?"
