[He Chengtian's] Reply: If, according to the thesis, one takes the three strokes as the Three Powers, then the initial stroke corresponds to the Earth line, and the third line discusses the Heavenly position. However, 'withdrawing from the world without regret' is not an appellation for 'thickly supporting' [Earth]; 'the gentleman diligently toils' is not a title for 'the azure expanse' [Heaven]. If indeed the Two Poles have nothing to rely upon, what is to be drawn upon to establish humanity? It is simply that when the line is centered and harmonious, it appropriately corresponds to the ruler's virtue.
