10.21

詔曰。帝王之法善決取捨明斷去就。審鑒同異妙察非常。朕於釋教。以潛思於府內。校量於今古。驗之以行事。算之以得失。理非常而不要。文高奇而無用。非無端而棄廢。何愛憎於儒釋。

The edict said: "The way of emperors and kings is good at deciding what to accept and reject, and clear in severing what to abandon and pursue. They carefully discern identity and difference, and subtly perceive extraordinary matters. As for the teaching of Śākya, We have pondered it deeply within Our palace, weighed it between past and present, tested it against actual events, and calculated it through gain and loss. Its principles are not ordinary yet unnecessary; its texts are lofty and remarkable yet useless. It was not discarded without cause. What fondness or hatred could We have toward Confucianism and Buddhism?"
