The edict said: "A great being embodies the Way essentially through subtle understanding; a supreme person is elevated and discerning, prizing non-attachment. Fusing the mind to be as broad as the dharma-nature, giving free rein to intent to have the same capacity as empty space—none among the myriad things is not good, and in beauty or ugliness, what is not the Way? Thus, dwelling amid alcohol and lying among meat, how could there be any guilt? Traveling with wife in tow and child in arms, how can one say this gives rise to fault? Thus the Prince took a wife and attained the Way, whereas Cūḍapanthaka renounced his wife and sank into delusion; Vimalakīrti dwelt in the secular world and was elevated and discerning, whereas Śāriputra left home and was foolishly attached. Therefore, what is good cannot yet be deemed good, and what is bad does not suffice to be called bad. The extraordinary claim of prohibiting alcohol and cutting off meat is utterly contrary to the Great Way."
