11.27

復有一人。見沙門道士齋靜讀經。乃笑曰。彼向空吟經。欲何希耶。虛腹日中一食。此罪人耳。道士乃慈心喻之。故執意不釋。死入地獄考毒五苦。

Furthermore, there was a man who saw śramaṇas and Daoists practicing the quiet retreat and reciting scriptures, and thereupon laughed and said: 'Facing empty space they chant scriptures; what do they hope for? With empty bellies they eat once at noon; these are merely sinners.' The Daoist then instructed him with a compassionate heart, yet he still held to his view without letting go; upon death he entered hell to suffer the examinations and torments of the five sufferings.
