11.65

對曰。湯仁不殺。開三面之網。放夏桀於鳴條之野。甚有仁德。爾時無佛。何以天曆不長。外丁外壬其年轉促。尚書云。湯行九伐太甲五征。伊尹立湯子勝。又立勝弟仲壬。又放太甲于桐宮。汲冢書云。伊尹自篡立。後太甲潛出。親殺伊尹而用其子。既稱忠朴之世。爾時無佛。何為舋起蕭牆。君臣無道。

We reply: Tang's benevolence spared life, opening the net on three sides and exiling Jie of the Xia to the wilds of Mingtiao; he possessed immense benevolence and virtue. At that time there was no Buddha; why was the heavenly calendar not long? Wai Ding and Wai Ren had reigns that grew increasingly brief. The Shangshu says that Tang carried out nine punitive expeditions, and Tai Jia five campaigns. Yi Yin installed Tang's son Sheng, then installed Sheng's younger brother Zhong Ren, and further exiled Tai Jia to the Tong Palace. The Jizhong shu says that Yi Yin usurped the throne himself, and later Tai Jia secretly emerged, killed Yi Yin with his own hands, and employed his sons. Given that this is praised as an era of loyalty and simplicity, and at that time there was no Buddha, why did disasters arise within the palace walls, and rulers and ministers act devoid of the Way?
