We reply: When King Wu attacked Zhou, his army crossed Mengjin, and a white fish entered the boat, responding to Heaven's auspicious mandate. The rules on posthumous titles say: "Overcoming and settling disaster and disorder is called Wu." The people relied on him to be revived; he marked the village [of Shang Rong], mounded the tumulus [of Bigan], rested the oxen, turned the horses loose, and governed so as to bring about Great Peace. You claim that without the Buddha life spans were long: why then was his reign so short, lasting only eleven years? King Yi and King Xi further saw their lineages terminated. In the time of King Wu of Zhou there was no Buddha, yet longevity and reign were even more impoverished, his descendants suffered turmoil, and their fortunes shifted in an instant.
