外論曰。道佛二經各陳其說。或言劫劫出世。競事無先。或代代出生。爭陳久遠。此之眇邈難取證知。今依傳史定其時代。人倫而語。則老尊而少卑。鄉黨為言。亦長兄而幼弟。此先後之異六也。

The external treatise says: The Daoist and Buddhist scriptures each set forth their own explanations: either saying that they appear kalpa after kalpa, competing in having none before them, or saying that they are born generation after generation, disputing who has endured the longest. Such distant matters are difficult to verify. Now, relying on historical records to establish their eras: speaking in terms of human relations, the elder is revered and the younger is low; speaking in terms of the village, there is also the elder brother and the younger brother. This is the sixth distinction in earlier and later.
