The External Discourse says: Now, the speech and rhymes of the Chinese and the barbarians differ. However, when the Buddhist scriptures speak of 'Śākyamuni', this is barbarian speech. In the translations of this land, it is called 'Nengru' (Capable Ru). The name 'Nengru' is inferior in status to the Duke of Zhou and Confucius; therefore they suppressed the inferior name 'Nengru' and preserved the barbarian title 'Śākya'. As for the expression *anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi*, in Chinese *a* means 'without' (*wu*), *nuttara* means 'supreme' (*shang*), *samyaksam* means 'correct and universal knowledge' (*zhengbianzhi*), and *bodhi* means 'the Way' (*dao*). In this land there originally was the 'unexcelled, correct, and true Way' in the teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi, so that the barbarian teaching has nothing to distinguish it; therefore they did not translate it. Furthermore, as for *bodhisattva mahāsattva*, in Chinese it means 'great good-hearted living being'. This name is low and inferior, not suited to superior gentlemen; concealing its vulgar appellation, neither did they translate it. All cases of non-translation follow this pattern. It covers up the worldly and confuses people's minds. Yet disdaining the old and esteeming the new is the common vice of wanderers; detesting the identical and delighting in the different is the vulgar sentiment of ordinary men. For this reason, Handan had guests who crawled, and the Ruosang had travelers who forgot to return. The world cannot perceive this. This is their seventh delusion.
