得表具一二。吾常近之才。加多事惛塞觸事面牆。不知道理。安在為復。以卿好樂玄法。是以聊復孟浪以言之耳。而來喻過美益以不安。

[The Emperor replies:] I have received your memorial in full. I have ordinary and mediocre talent; in addition, with many affairs my mind is muddled and blocked, facing a wall in every affair, not knowing where the principle of the Way lies. It was only because you delight in the abstruse Dharma that I tentatively spoke of it in an undisciplined manner. Your excessive praise makes me feel all the more uneasy.
