Furthermore, Wang Dao and Zhou Yi were the foremost ministers of the realm; Wang Meng and Xie Shang were models among men. Next were Xi Chao, Wang Mi, Liu Qiu, Xie Ke, and others, together over seventy eminent talents east of the Yangtze River. Their learning encompassed the nine schools, and their talents outshone a thousand ages. All said that when it comes to the true essentials of spiritual nature that can govern oneself and succor the world, nothing surpasses the teachings of Śākya. Also, Emperor Wen of Song, together with He Shangzhi, Wang Xuanbao, and others, engaged in this very discussion, saying: “If all within the realm were to observe these essentials, I could bring about great peace while sitting still.” Shangzhi also said: “When the ten good actions flourish, humans and devas prosper; when the five precepts are practiced, ghosts and beasts cease to exist.” This is truly the profound model for saving the world; how could it be discussed rashly? As a palace secretary, your learning is abundant, your talent lofty, your writing splendid, and your reasoning incisive. In Qin a single word was hung, and in Shu a thousand pieces of gold were suspended; how could they match such extraordinary brilliance? Not measuring my own narrow view, I have lightly set forth crude remarks, daring to offer this response, which merely joins coarse hemp to fine silk. When Palace Secretary Li obtained Falin’s further explanation, his mind opened with clarity and his repeated doubts vanished at once. He then circulated this treatise widely for people to see and hear. Thus both writings have been brought to light together, each expressing their intent.
