2.40

時京兆韋文秀隱中岳。世祖徵問方士金丹事。對曰。神道幽昧變化難測。可以闇遇。難以預期。臣昔受於先師。未之為也。世祖重其豪族溫雅。遣與尚書崔賾詣王屋山。合丹竟不成。

At that time, Wei Wenxiu of Jingzhao lived in seclusion on the Central Peak. Shizu summoned and questioned him concerning the golden elixir of the recipe-masters. He replied: "The divine Dao is obscure and dark; its changes are hard to fathom. One may meet it in the dark, but it is difficult to anticipate beforehand. I received it from my late master in the past, but have not yet practiced it." Shizu esteemed his prominent clan and his gentleness and elegance, so he sent him with the Minister Cui Ze to Mount Wangwu. In the end, they could not compound the elixir.
