When great men arise, they shepherd the living people. From the era of knotting cords onwards, events were recorded in script. From Fu Xi and Xuan Yuan down to the Three Dynasties, the traces of the ancient records were burned by Qin. The Han gathered surviving books, which once again piled up like mountains and hills, certainly causing the Six Schools and Seven Summaries, Ban [Gu] and Ma [Sima Qian], to differ in their categories. The teachings of the Śākya were first heard of during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Former Han. During the Yuanshou era, Huo Qubing captured the Prince of Kunxie and a golden statue over a zhang tall. The Emperor considered it a great deity, placed it in the Ganquan Palace, and burned incense and prostrated before it. This was the gradual beginning of the circulation of the Buddha's way. When the Western Regions were opened, Zhang Qian was dispatched as an envoy to Daxia; upon his return, he reported that in the states of Shengtu and Tianzhu there were the teachings of the Futu. In the Yuanshou era of Emperor Ai, Jing Xian received oral transmission of the Futu Scripture from the King of the Da Yuezhi.
