20.19

竊以。寶山峻極駘足未窺。慧海遙波輕舟詎泛。故以探沙亂妙類杵迷形。百代同昏千年誰啟。

I reflect that the jeweled mountain is exceedingly lofty, such that slow-footed steeds cannot catch sight of its peak; the waves of the ocean of wisdom are vast and distant, such that light skiffs cannot sail across. Thus, searching the sand confuses the subtle, just as rubbing a pestle misidentifies the form. For a hundred generations all remained in darkness; through a thousand years, who could initiate illumination?
