Xiao Gong, Marquis of Hengshan, inquired: "I do not yet know: since supreme-meaning truth has the designation 'meaning', why is worldly truth alone without the name 'meaning'?"
The imperial decree answered: "Since the worldly is unreal and conventional, there is no meaning to be discerned."
[Xiao Gong] also inquired: "If there is no meaning to be discerned, why is it called truth?"
The imperial decree answered: "The ordinary and conventional truly see it; therefore the name 'truth' is established."
[Xiao Gong] also inquired: "If the ordinary and conventional seeing it as existent can receive the name 'truth', the ordinary and conventional seeing it as existent should also be able to receive the character 'meaning'."
The imperial decree answered: "The ordinary and conventional truly see it, so the name 'truth' may be established. The unreal and conventional has no meaning; how can one arbitrarily style it with 'meaning'?"
[Xiao Gong] also inquired: "Although the unreal and conventional has no real meaning, it is not without the meaning of the unreal and conventional. Since there is this unreal and conventional, how can it not receive the name 'meaning'?"
The imperial decree answered: "Precisely because it is unreal and conventional, there is no meaning to be discerned. If there were meaning to be discerned, why would it be called unreal and conventional?"
