Your servant Tong reports: Mu Fozi, the Inner Palace Imperial Attendant, has reverently proclaimed the imperial decree, graciously bestowing a copy of the Imperial Commentary on the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, in ten cases, comprising a total of one hundred and one fascicles. Glimpsing the sun in a cold land would not suffice to match this marvel; meeting an immortal while gathering medicinal herbs could never compare to this joy. Prostrate, your servant considers that what the six lines of the hexagrams illuminate reaches the ultimate depths only in subtle portents, and what the four books comprehend issues mandates solely within the terrestrial realm. How could they encompass causes and conditions, or expound this teaching of the jeweled city? How could they embrace the absolute and the conventional, or unfold these words of the full moon? It is just when the Way harmonizes the great chiliocosm, and transformation spreads evenly across the hundred million [worlds], that clouds cover the seed of consciousness and rain drenches the field of the body. How could one speak any further of the tortoise script of Emperor Yao or the archive of King Wu of Zhou? What need to wait for the cessation of inscribed basins and vessels, or the casting aside of the ancient classics? The marvelous scriptures of amṛta have first brought down extraordinary grace. Examining myself and reflecting on my foolishness, I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. Unable to bear the height of my reverence, I respectfully submit this memorial of thanks.
