The Prince speaks: Being separated from your news and instructions has constantly caused lingering longing. In this severe wind and harsh cold, I hope you have remained peaceful and harmonious. Prostrate, I have learned that at the Dharma assembly of Vimalakīrti, you personally received the words from the golden mouth. The precious words of the Deer Park and the principle accord with Vulture Peak; the subtle, esoteric, secret treasury has flourished here, and the adornment of the bodhimaṇḍa has expanded ever since. Not only does the lamp of the mind burn bright at night, but the blossoms of thought also soar in the morning. Moreover, your intention to propagate clarification was originally rooted in the inner teaching. Now, escorting the chariot of the ten virtuous deeds, you open the road of the eightfold governance, flow the waters of prajñā, and wash away the dust of mental consciousness. Using these spring sprouts, they will turn into autumn fruits. Whenever the Prince recalls the splendid gathering at Hualin, where I unworthily occupied the lowest seat, through dawn and night I bathed in marvelous words. When the assembly ended and leisure remained, retiring to reflect brought added insight. Hand in hand we climbed the heights, exchanging conversation and laughter; gazing up at the nine stories, peering down a hundred feet, the golden pool stirred the moon and the jade trees held the wind. At that time, it was truly worthy of being called Dharma joy. Now, holding office in this region, riding the relay carriage in a remote corner, hearing that the rain of wisdom pours down, joy and leaping fill me. In vain I draw from the rushing torrent, having no way to receive instruction directly. Empty and lacking anything, my spirit is not polished. Bound by ignorance, I have attachment, sighing over how difficult it is to extricate myself. Furthermore, since stepping down from the chariot, discussions of doctrine have been scarce. Past memories are exhausted, and new understandings have not yet been tasted. I am ashamed of my oral recitation and lack mental eloquence; forever falling short of pouring from vase to vase, I remain ashamed before the dyed cloth. Moreover, since the cloud of compassion has spread and the ocean of wisdom is deep, I hope that the ends of its shadows and the remnants of its waves will occasionally sprinkle and wipe [my dust]. Yet as separation grows deeper, words well up to fill my eyes. May you kindly receive this. My words do not adequately convey my meaning. Respectfully spoken.
