In Quanting there was a person of eminent virtue named Zhu Sanyi. Not only was he conversant and sharp in non-Buddhist learning, but his inner faith was also profound and clear. He consistently venerated the Mahāyāna in his heart and chanted the prajñā scriptures with his mouth. Suddenly, he composed a treatise on spontaneous nature (ziran), thereby falling into the grasping after inherent nature. Perhaps he was pretending to agree with heterodox views, or perhaps an inverted mind had genuinely arisen in him; in either case, this inevitably damaged the correct and true, and excessively harmed the supreme Path. I have briefly composed the following treatise to dispel his grasping. Although its phrasing is not worth adopting, its reasoning may perhaps be worthy of examination. If there are those who share my aspiration, I hope we may peruse it together.
