22.55

省書具悉來旨。法師夙標高志行出塵表。汎寶舟而登彼岸。搜妙道而闢法門。弘闡大猷盪滌眾罪。是故慈雲欲卷。舒之而蔭四空。慧日將昏。朗之而照八極。舒朗之者其惟法師乎。朕學淺心拙在物猶迷。況佛教幽微。豈能仰測。請為經題者非己所聞。又云。新撰西域記者當自披覽。勅奘尚重請經題序啟（本闕）。

I have examined your letter and fully comprehend its purport. The Dharma Master has long displayed lofty aspirations, his conduct transcending the realm of dust. Floating the precious boat, you ascended the other shore; searching out the marvelous Way, you opened the Dharma gates. Broadly expounding the great model, you washed away myriad offenses. For this reason, when the clouds of compassion were about to roll up, you spread them out to shade the four voids; when the sun of wisdom was about to dim, you brightened it to illuminate the eight extremities. Who but the Dharma Master could spread and brighten them thus? My learning is shallow and my mind clumsy; toward mundane things I am still confused, so how could I peer into the profundity and subtlety of the Buddhist teaching? As for your request for a scriptural preface, it is beyond what I know. Furthermore, as for the newly compiled Record of the Western Regions, I shall peruse it myself. (The Dharma Master Xuanzang again submitted a petition requesting a scriptural preface, but the original is missing.)
