"The world lingers in vast desolation;
The sea of suffering is boundless and long.
The cover of desire expands and conceals;
The net of craving stretches wide.
The Dharma lamp does not shine;
The wisdom sun is clouded in light.
The dilapidated house burns and collapses;
Blazing fires drift and leap.
The two poles construct and destroy;
Can their years be reckoned?
The three turnings are expansive and distant;
Who can calculate the empty kalpa?
Following darkness, how can there be dawn?
Submerged in the river, none cross over.
Succession having grown sparse,
Truly we rely on one destined for the world.
The sun gave birth to the bright and wise;
A descended spirit from natural conditions.
Harboring signs and storing his vessel,
It showed itself in his childhood years.
His spiritual potential was clear from youth;
His settled discernment was early displayed.
Like jade first polished;
Like a pearl emerging from a spring.
Weary and disgusted with dust and defilement,
He transcended and awoke to the mysterious and subtle.
Renouncing foolish bonds,
He cleared away contrary emotions.
At the age of losing milk teeth he planted his resolve;
In his boyhood he followed a master.
Receiving the rules, he restrained himself in reverence;
Solemn in models, awe-inspiring in demeanor.
Conducting himself with pure integrity,
Virtuous and prudent in mental actions.
In study he discerned the hidden source;
In questioning he plumbed the depths of principle.
What was once obscured was illuminated by him;
Past doubts were mirrored here.
The master labored less and gained double;
His thought was lofty, his undertaking flourishing.
When he reached middle age,
He was relaxed, profound, vast, and broad.
Turning the wheel, he expounded the emptiness of dharmas;
Clouds cleared away and the sun shone bright.
Riding the thoroughfare was like walking smooth ground;
Opening expedients seemed wide and clear.
The myriad kinds of beings
Took this as their standard of veneration.
To the west of the Yellow River his fame was renowned;
To the south of the Yangtze he marked his excellence.
His reputation spread because of his virtue;
His praise was due to the wealth of his Dao.
Guiding and encouraging those who inquired,
He joyfully investigated and imparted.
Benevolent and thick like the earth;
His resolve was high like a peak.
He would stop eating to relieve the hungry,
Give away quilted clothes to pity the cold.
Possessions never stayed for a day;
Wealth was used solely for giving.
He never showed a haughty face to the base,
Nor a flattered countenance to the noble.
Pooled in this fine blessing,
Equal to the fragrant orchids on the registry.
Where his teaching reached,
Obscured consciousness was made bright.
Where his wisdom guided,
Endeavors were accomplished from the mind.
He received the confused with generous wealth,
Comforted the bewildered, understanding their feelings.
Relying on the subtle to request the essential,
There were none who did not attain full passage.
The perilous road is constantly distant;
Guidance and leading have their limit.
Arising and ceasing alternate in succession;
Thought after thought never rests.
Passing years seldom linger;
The western light presses swiftly.
How could changing clouds halt?
He was about to journey to the pure realm.
Alas, how mournful!
His body deep in the suffering of illness,
His mind understood the four diseases.
Needles, stones, doctors, and shamans
Lost measure in their treatments.
With upright thought toward the Dharma community,
With correct mindfulness in the Vinaya of compassion,
Not abandoning valiant diligence,
He vowed to rescue the multitude from falling.
Alas, how mournful!
Union must end in parting;
A provisional meeting must pass away.
Together lamenting in the white grove,
Silent in the middle of the night.
Conversing with people, he urged them toward good;
Looking up to heaven, his carriage stood ready.
To that azure palace he went;
He departed from this dusty cottage.
Alas, how mournful!
Subtle words are severed in eternal passing;
The boat and raft are wrecked on a distant shore.
Brushing past the dignified splendors of lofty dust,
Overgrown are the carved beauties of the high halls.
Casting off physical existence as if leaving it behind,
To what realm has his feeling spirit migrated?
Longing disciples who relied on his teaching,
In vain weep tears of blood, moved by his departure.
Alas, how mournful!"
