During the Yongping era of Emperor Ming of the Later Han, the Emperor dreamt of a golden man flying in front of the palace hall. He then dispatched Qin Jing and others to the Western Regions to seek the Buddhadharma. Consequently, they obtained the triratna and transmitted it eastward to Luoyang. The standing portrait of Śākya[muni] was painted: this was the Buddha jewel. The Sutra of Forty-two Chapters was translated: this was the Dharma jewel. Kā[śyapa Mātaṅga] and Zhu [Falan] arrived: this was the Saṅgha jewel. A monastery was established at the west gate of the city of Luo, ordaining people and teaching them, spreading from near to far. It was maintained through successive generations until the end of the Han dynasty. Throughout the Wei dynasty, across five rulers and forty-five years, reverence grew ever deeper, and there was no mention of bowing or suppression. Throughout the Wu dynasty in the Jiangbiao region, across four rulers and fifty-nine years, Sun Quan first opened the Buddhadharma; moved by an auspicious omen, he established a monastery named Jianchu. Later, when Sun Hao's tyrannical rule was about to abolish and suppress it, the various ministers remonstrated with him, and he ceased, summoning a monk to receive the five precepts.
