Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, is it because of the tathāgatagarbha that the buddhas do not eat meat?" The Buddha said: "It is so. In the beginningless birth and death of all sentient beings, revolving through life after life, there is none who has not been a father, mother, elder brother, younger brother, or sister, just like an actor transforming unpredictably. One's own flesh and another's flesh are just one flesh; therefore, the buddhas do not eat any meat. Furthermore, Mañjuśrī, the realm of all sentient beings and my realm are just one realm; the flesh that houses it is just one flesh; therefore, the buddhas do not eat any meat." Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, are not mother-of-pearl, shells, wax, honey, leather, silk, and cotton wool the flesh of one's own realm?" The Buddha told Mañjuśrī: "Do not speak this way. The Tathāgata keeps far away from all worldly things; the Tathāgata does not eat [them]. If it is said that he habitually associates with worldly things, there is no such thing. If he habitually associates with them, it is a skillful means. If an item comes by successive transmission, one may make use of it. If it is the place from which the item originates, one must not make use of it. If it comes by successive transmission and has left the hands of the killer, one may make use of it." Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "Now in this city there is a leather artisan who can make leather shoes. Someone buys them and gives them as an alms offering. This is coming by successive transmission; should the Buddha accept them or not? Furthermore, World-Honoured One, if a cow dies of itself, the cow owner takes the hide from a caṇḍāla and gives it to the leather artisan, and the artisan makes leather shoes and offers them to a person who keeps the precepts—this having come by successive transmission, may one make use of them or not?" The Buddha told Mañjuśrī: "If a cow dies of itself, and the cow owner takes the hide to make leather shoes and offers them to a person who keeps the precepts, should he accept them or not? If he does not accept them, that is the rule for bhikṣus; if
