The three realms are a prison; the four modes of birth revolve in cycles. Whether remaining at home or leaving the household, those who have not severed the inversion of self cannot be exempt. Already entangled by birth and death, body and mind toil, endlessly changing; there is nothing that is not suffering. Therefore a sūtra says: 'The three realms are all suffering; what is there to enjoy?' Yet sentient beings are constantly deluded, asserting: 'The mundane is permanent and joyful; the supramundane cause of joy is impermanent and suffering.' How deeply sunken and abruptly inverted they are! Merely upon testing a thorn against the body, one immediately feels the sensation of suffering; how could one speak of joy? Briefly citing several items to verify that there is only suffering: if one considers eating and drinking to be joy, then the more one consumes, the more harmonious the body and the more delighted the mind should be; why is it that a slight departure from moderation turns into illness?
