A sūtra states: 'In the worldly realm it is called bondage; in the Way it is called liberation.' Liberation is brought about by non-obstruction; bondage is incurred through dependence on provisions. Now, if one seeks non-dependence through dependence, dependence will become even more troublesome; if one practices non-dependence without depending, dependence will naturally be dispelled. Once dependence is dispelled, the gate of non-obstruction can be entered. If one's aspiration rests on sustenance and nurture, one will see the bindings become even heavier. Sentient beings of the ordinary sort encounter many obstacles in whatever they turn to; if they do not depend on things, they have no way to sustain themselves, yet depending on things makes encumbrances heavy. With encumbrances of life entangling them, by what means can liberation come? Now, having deeply understood its encumbrance, encumbrance is truly suffering. How is this known?
