All phenomena are fundamentally empty, quiescent and beyond words. Due to causes and conditions, they appear in written words. One should know that written words and scriptures are fundamentally aimed first at destroying disease and eradicating confusion. Since confusions number eighty-four thousand, the teaching gates likewise contain eighty-four thousand Dharma treasuries. When the disease is dispelled and confusion removed, the medicine also vanishes accordingly; like the parable of the raft, this can be understood in spirit. However, the multitude of beings sink in the net of delusion and remain fixated upon words; because of this clinging view, the medicine of teaching is perpetually presented. Thus, golden slips fill the precious halls, and jade scrolls shine in the spiritual palaces, analyzing emptiness and existence between provisional and real, and displaying provisional and ultimate wisdom without fixed limits. Therefore, throughout the Tathāgata's forty-nine years in this single generation, he manifested teachings according to conditions and preached the Dharma in diverse ways. Even in his nirvāṇa, there were only auditory teachings; if one clings strictly to words, one will inevitably fall into ruin. Yet when discussing the profound through principles, the orthodox doctrine is without obscurity. Although words may succeed or fail, the comprehensive purport is hard to contradict. Therefore, the reliance on the Dharma was established as an eternal standard, such that deva-māras and non-Buddhists dare not encroach upon it. Since the sun of wisdom set and the clouds of Dharma spread afar, if not for bamboo slips and scrolls, there would be no means to render service. The venerable and great Kāśyapa, the preeminent among the followers of the Dharma gate, struck the bell to sound the summons, assembling a thousand non-learning arhat monks. During a single summer retreat, they compiled the bequeathed words, seeking the twelve aspects of the teachings to encompass them in the texts of the Tripiṭaka. The scriptures of palm leaves are beyond measure in quantity; accumulated in the Western Regions for nearly a thousand years, as fortunes shifted, they were gradually translated eastward into the Chinese court. From that time until today, nearly six hundred years have passed. The cataloged true scriptures exceed seven thousand rolls; their words and meanings are luminous and keen, their discussion and flavor exhaustive. In the near term, they bring peace to the state and benefit people; in the long term, they transcend the ordinary and realize the sagely, fully detailed in these rolls and volumes. Let the wise seek them out! With the utmost sincerity, on behalf of:
