剋責之情猶昧。審的之旨未彰。故以事檢心。校所修習。既知不及彌增悚恧。何謂檢校。檢我此身。從旦至中。從中至暮。從暮至夜。從夜至曉。乃至一時一剋一念一頃。

The sentiment of reproaching oneself is still dim, and the precise aim is not yet made clear. Therefore, one examines the mind through events, checking what has been cultivated. Once knowing one's inadequacy, fear and shame increase all the more. What is meant by examining and checking? It is to examine this body of mine from dawn to midday, from midday to dusk, from dusk to night, from night to daybreak, even for a single period, a single quarter-hour, a single thought-moment, or a single instant:
