The Emperor respectfully inquires after Upādhyāya Lang of Mount Tai. The Great Sage responds to the times; his numinous expediency is transcendent and supreme. His shade covers the ten directions, and his transformation blends without exterior, like the mountains and oceans nourishing the multitude of living beings, or heaven and earth rearing the myriad things. He nurtures life and death, clarifying the spirit in quietude and subtlety. With my slight and meager virtues, I was born to encounter the Sage; yet, separated by myriad state affairs, I am unable to ride forth to visit you. Now I send an envoy with a comfortable carriage to invite you, humbly hoping that your numinous light will turn its canopy toward the capital city. I also send herewith several pounds of purple gold to gild your images, thirty bolts of dark-red damask silk, and three servant boys to be available for sweeping and sprinkling. A person of the highest attainment never goes against others; I fortunate hope you will accept them. I imagine that your mysterious insight will surely perceive my intention.
