Disciple Xiao Gang again and repeatedly with utmost sincerity takes refuge in the triratna. I have humbly heard that the Records declare 'do not be haughty,' displaying the handed-down writings of the Zhu and Si rivers; the sūtras state 'do not be arrogant,' verifying the wondrous scriptures of Ayodhyā. Thus, upon once meeting the river spirit, the King of Laṅkā still had residual habits; ascending as a guest to the Celestial Emperor, the Prince of Huainan still had improper words. There were also those whose talent was called reclusive and whose demeanor was held to be lofty and aloof, yet it was still enough to leave the Lord of Jin sitting in paralysis and stand before the Ruler of Qi. How much more so for those whose Dao is lofty in the three trainings and whose Dharma combines the five assemblies! Yet, as if passing before the front palace, or like leaving through the north gate, one does not pay reverence in a secluded chamber, nor discard the bow to touch their feet. Presuming upon these superior conditions, I vow to give rise to a great aspiration: from this day forward until bodhi, toward all who have left the household I shall show utmost devotion and reverence. I intend to eliminate the seven types of arrogance and subdue the six sense organs; as Piṇḍola walked on foot, may I be free from that fault; as Jīvaka abandoned his carriage, I now yearn to emulate him. May the unseen and visible assemblies all bear witness.
