So-and-so, of such-and-such title, bows his head in worship to all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, all the venerable Dharma of the ten directions and three times, all the wise and noble ones of the ten directions and three times, and the present monks of great virtue. The Emperor, taboo name so-and-so, a bodhisattva, is sagacious, wise, broad, profound, and equal to the sages. His mind is like empty space, illuminating and plumbing prajñā. He made a vast vow to shoulder sentient beings. As the divine path flourished, he received this grand enterprise. Since the end of the hundred kings, fortune met with hardship; the dust stirred across the Five Sacred Mountains, and the Six Armies were mobilized daily. Hardship occupied his thoughts, pressing poignantly upon the sovereign's heart. Subsequently, having deeply realized suffering and emptiness and fully believed in non-self, [he realized that] jeweled terraces and flowered pillars were originally not truly real, while the turrets and watchtowers of enemy cities brought an abundance of suffering instruments. Thereupon, he sat at the place of enlightenment and resided quietly in the dhyāna chamber, firmly establishing roots of goodness and fulfilling dāna: stone walls, mountains, and rivers; precious carriages, elephants, and horses; head, eyes, marrow, and brain; wives, children, state, and cities; the imperial carriage, dragon robes, halcyon curtains, and jade armrests. What his merit moved and what his majesty and kindness reached—all were reverently relinquished in great abandonment as an offering to the Three Honoured Ones. He then wished to shake his clothes on Mount Kongtong and stride high across the six directions, going to the forest to sit in serene contemplation and wandering together with the Śākya clan. The purple palace was left empty, and the imperial yellow-roofed position stood unoccupied; the spirits above were startled, and the solid earth trembled with fright. We, your disciples, have our bodies entangled in the delusion of affection and our karma structured by afflictions. Heaven produced the multitude of people and established a shepherd for them; the fearful common folk have none to look up to if not the sovereign. How could it be permissible for one of supreme honor, residing over ten thousand chariots, to carry out his sentiment of solitary retreat, or for one suited to be an emperor to undertake the affairs of a commoner? Moreover, the barbarians disrupt the Huaxia, and brigands are treacherous and rebellious. The flint-stewards keep vigilance, and the beacon fires of Ganquan shine daily; the four suburbs have many ramparts, yet the might of the tower-ships has not been fully unfurled. If the Seven Sages are lost in clouds, far away upon the Fen River, and the Eight Steeds run sleekly only along the shores of the Jade Pool, then whom will the world rely upon? The ministers will have no one to serve, and the ancestral temples will see their enduring rules neglected. We, your disciples, could not bear this pressing plight. We prudently donate such-and-such amount of money and such-and-such goods, reverently offering them as dakṣiṇā to the triratna and the great assembly, respectfully redeeming what was relinquished by the Emperor and the princes so that all may return to their original positions. We prostrate and pray that the triratna of the ten directions and the present monks of great virtue, using the power of compassion and an unimpeded mind, will sit at the place of the Way, emit light, manifest and proclaim the Dharma, rejoice in harmony, and grant this transcendent assent. May the Emperor's countenance of gazing upon the clouds and sun be as solid as the Southern Mountain; may his divine and sagely virtue be as revered as the Northern Star. May the stars of the inner palace queens and consorts, and the relatives of golden omens and jade trunks, exhaust the blessings of accumulated goodness and enjoy the joys of myriad years. May the jade imperial carriage turn its reins and the golden gate swing wide open; may the hundred officials crane their necks and the sash-wearing ministers stand side by side. We pray that worldly toil and cloudy veils dissolve together, and that the myriad millions of people share peace with heaven and earth. In our earnest and sincere folly, we dare make this plea upon pain of death. Your disciple so-and-so bows in worship.
