The disciple of the bodhisattva precepts bows his head and makes obeisance to the triratna. I reflect that all the buddha lands cannot be described in words, and the designations of the Tathāgatas have no limit. Some, whether in the past or the present, together take the surname Bhāradvāja; others, at the same time or across different ages, all have the name Śākyamuni. Some are a billion Vidyārājas; some are thirty thousand Dīpaṅkaras. Going and coming through the three realms, they pervade the ten directions. Those who hear their names depart from defilement; those who accept and uphold them attain the Way. Such merit is difficult to conceive. Śākyamuni Tathāgata, with unhindered power, traversed the pure path of the śāla trees and stayed in the auspicious, blessed ground. The beings transformed in the jeweled pool welled up naturally; he spoke the Great Penetration and Expansive Scope, proclaiming the names and titles of the triratna, just as the six devas all return to the single vehicle. As a disciple, using a mind of compassion, I cultivate equal karma. I constantly hold that when the myriad states have crimes, the fault rests with one person alone; that the four forms of birth are not at peace is rightly a heavy burden. Therefore, inner cultivation rests upon myself; even when the sun tilts, I forget fatigue. With vigor in my heart, I do not rest late into the night. Where the bodhisattvas walk, I vow to uphold it all; the Dharma gates of all buddhas, I make sure they are practiced as taught. I desire that throughout all under heaven and all across the land, there are no longer any specks of fear; and that wriggling and flying insects eternally obtain a place of refuge. Now, reverently following the scriptural teachings, at a certain place I establish the Expansive Scope Confession for a certain number of monks and a certain number of days, reciting it one hundred times and circumambulating to the right seven times. With paste incense and powdered incense, I exhaust the appearances of adornment; with right mindfulness and right contemplation, I exhaust my sincere mind. May the assembly present here pay reverent homage with utmost sincerity to our original teacher, Śākyamuni Tathāgata, and pay homage to the names of the triratna spoken in the Expansive Scope Sutra. May the buddhas and bodhisattvas respond to the sounds and follow the echoes, radiating pure light to illuminate all darkness and turbidities, bestowing cool water to extinguish this thirsty craving. May we board the boat of the six perfections and enter the ocean of samādhi, gathering the myriad existences to unite with suchness, aligning the three realms to ascend to the true Dharma. I bow my head and pay reverent homage to the eternally abiding triratna.
