I venture to consider that the Buddhas of the three periods of time, by the conditions of their vows, and the Tathāgatas of the ten directions, through their wisdom and skillful means, unleash unhindered eloquence and open inexhaustible gates. The currents of the Dharma branch out, their ancestral sources boundless; the trunk of the Dharma divides and scatters, its foliage and branches limitless. It is not merely that the Mahāprajñā alone possesses eighty-four thousand [teachings]; as for the portals of dhāraṇī, there are also ninety-two hundred million. Everywhere they are proclaimed under various names; their merits are immeasurable and their majestic spiritual power unfathomable. Take, for instance, Vasu being plucked from the hells, Māra conceiving the aspiration for bodhi, Huaju obtaining supernatural powers, and Leiyin escaping concealment—none failed to rely on these verses and sentences and depend on this karmic power. There are also fourfold disciples and sentient beings of the ten directions who, upon hearing a single line, arouse the mind [for enlightenment], or upon listening to a single exposition, awaken to the Path. Thus we know that among all dharmas, there is none that is not true and wondrous.
I, your disciple, humbly cultivate practice. What I study is bodhi; dining late and rising early, what I practice is deliverance. With the power of a single mind I embrace sentient beings; in the span of a single thought I encompass the marks of all dharmas. The all-inclusive wisdom of the Tathāgata I vow entirely to retain; the merits of all Buddhas I wish completely to disseminate. Now, reverently basing myself on the scriptures and teachings of the Dharma canons, together with the great assembly here present, I pay homage with utmost devotion to Śākyamuni Buddha; I pay homage to the verses and sentences of the dhāraṇī; I pay homage to the monk Leiyin; I pay homage to the Bodhisattva Huaju. I vow to rely on this merit to tame sentient beings, eradicate the mind of the three poisons, and shatter the ten unwholesome karmas, so that the four hundred afflictions may naturally be purified, and the eighty-four thousand defiling toils may all at once be liberated. May we obtain the power of divine dhāraṇīs, be endowed with the excellence of the Dharma seal, enter the portals of dhāraṇī, contemplate the realms of the Buddhas, and have the fires of the hells forever extinguished without remainder. Bowing my head, I pay reverent homage to the eternally abiding triratna.
