Your disciple, the orphaned son Yun, knocks his head, bows his head, and offers reverence. Your disciple's transgression has joined the seen and unseen realms, and he has fully suffered the bitterness of mourning. Clinging, collapsing, and leaping in grief, his flesh and marrow are crushed and melted away; reflecting on this tangled grief, his liver and intestines are severed inch by inch. Wailing to heaven and calling to earth, his utmost sincerity is eternally cut off. To discard life and abandon the body would ultimately be of no help. Thinking to seek blessings from above and broadly perform Dharma services, so as to express the grief of boundless loss and modestly entrust my sincerity of fond remembrance: casting statues and ordaining monks, looking upward in obedience to the teachings of the Dharma; establishing fasts and setting up assemblies, strictly relying on the scriptures; expounding the Mahāyāna and guiding sentient beings across—its merit is not slight. I humbly consider that the Master, the Great Rector, has a mind for the Way that is pure and gentle, and supreme virtue that is dense and profound. Your wisdom encompasses emptiness and existence; your illumination penetrates the true and the conventional. Your vast learning is inexhaustible; your responsive eloquence is unobstructed. You are the master and guide of a generation, revered throughout the four seas. Your disciple planted good causes in past lives and early received your intimate regard; our affection is like kin of bone and flesh, our devotion like the bond of gold and orchids. What secular books call mysterious concord and spiritual communion, the inner canon calls good friends and spiritual mentors. Respectfully relying on this slight affinity, I dare to set forth a great vow. In the middle of summer next year, I wish to humbly request you to deliver lectures. Since your heart for propagating the Dharma knows neither self nor other, and your deep affection is extraordinary, I earnestly hope you will deign to descend. Requests and invitations from both public and private, monastic and lay, are already numerous; hence I consult you beforehand, sincerely hoping you will grant this wish. How could I have imagined that all at once there would suddenly be this petition? Approaching the paper, shattered with sorrow, my words are out of order. Your disciple, the orphaned son Wang Yun, knocks his head, knocks his head, bows his head, and offers reverence.
