From the Land of the Great Dream, Long Night Commandery, Unawakened County, Sleep-Talking Ward, the Sovereign of the Six Free Desires, Emperor of Paranirmitavaśavartin, replies by proclamation to the High Seat General, Grand Pacification Ambassador of the Southern Jambudvīpa Circuit, Buddhist Minister of State, Master of the Law An, at his headquarters: / News has reached me from afar; my joy is as though we had met in person. Reading through your sentences, I am truly delighted. Now I see that the ministers of a great state are indeed lofty in etiquette and righteousness! I understand that you, General, are open-minded and magnanimous, your hidden practices profound and dark, your embrace encompassing rivers and mountains, your enclosure holding the cosmos. Your thoughts run deep for the ancestral altars, and your worries reach the common folk. Your fine spirit reaches a thousand fathoms, your true mind ten thousand fathoms. Truly, you are the sturdy grass in a raging gale, a loyal minister in a turbulent age! I hope that when our paths cross we shall be neighbours, for there is no gulf between you and me. Bending to worldly custom, I send this reply. / In the past, when the house of Zhou declined, the six states boiled like a cauldron; when the fortune of the Han dynasty was extinguished, the realm was divided into three. At times foreign barbarians invaded in rebellion, their venom poisoning the Central Plains; at times internal calamity secretly arose, bringing disaster upon the good and virtuous. Rising up like magpies when responding to the times, transforming like leopards when discerning the age—such things have existed since antiquity; how could they be confined to this day? / It was only that as the people accumulated evils, Heaven sent down misfortune. The Śākya Emperor suddenly passed away; sorrow enveloped his ministers and consorts, grief soaked the entire land. The Crown Prince Maitreya cultivates virtue in the palace of the mind; the full moon pauses behind the mountain, and within dense groves the medicine remains hidden. The cosmic cycles converged upon an era of misfortune; the age was bereft of the sovereign of the ninth-five. The feudal lords were deceitful, living alongside one another in suspicion. The teachings and rules of the eighteen schools were uneven and discordant; the banquets of the ninety-six ways countered one another. Wolves devoured along the seashores; owls screeched in mountain folds. The Left Scribe recorded no speech, and the Right Scribe recorded no deeds. The national constitutions and court ceremonies withered away with the frost and dew; the celestial seal and imperial jade melted away like ice and scattered like autumn leaves. Ministers were resentful and the people angry; followers rebelled and kin estranged themselves. Those fleeing had nowhere to turn, stumbling along in perpetual exile. / I privately believe that when one’s lot falls in a time of great peace, one is bathed in courtly transformation; but when one encounters a turbulent age, one rescues from disaster through arms. This is surely the expedient adaptation of a man of insight! Respectfully leading righteous troops, indignant to the point of forgetting to eat, we scaled mountains to grapple with tigers and went to the river to slay dragons. Combining the martial with the civil, we made light of our lives and valued righteousness. The altars of state were not what we plotted for; the heavenly throne was not what we coveted. It was simply that the fortress of the mind lacked a master, so that defilements disported themselves; waves of desire surged forth, sweeping the source of the mind far away; in a sudden haze of the great dream, we drifted alongside the eternal night. / Taking advantage of this slumber, to comfort the people and punish the guilty, I first dispatched the Foam-Cluster General, the Dark-Yellow Marquis. Leading the troops of sky-flowers and spurring the steeds of mirages, he marched to the corner of the Gandharva city and drew up the formation of floating clouds. Halberds and armour blazed and shone, bows and pikes stood in irregular rows. Before blades even crossed, the yielding troops were already routed! Next I commanded the Ravine-Echo General, the Duke of Silk and Bamboo, leading the hosts of the palace and commercial notes, to occupy the valley of echoing sounds, cutting down as soon as heard. Next I commanded the Hundred-Blends General, the Count of Orchid and Musk, leading the brigade of fragrant scents, to ride the wind and unfold his formation, clearing the sky for a thousand leagues. Next I commanded the Six-Flavours General, leading the troops of rich delicacy, to serve as the Commander of the Mouth, guarding the entrance to the great ocean, devouring all without remainder. Next I commanded the Seven-Contacts General, leading the host of soft smoothness; no sooner were the war drums struck than the city of the body collapsed like roof-tiles. / As the five armies campaigned in the van, they were ever victorious in a hundred battles; blessed by Heaven, nothing was inappropriate. Fearing that the lair had not yet been exhausted, I personally set out to punish the crimes. Having donned my martial attire, I emerged from the empty cavern. Unleashing wisdom like a deep fountain and rousing majesty like mountain peaks, I led soldiers of false imagination numbering into trillions. All submerged their spirits within the ocean of consciousness and hid their shadows in the mountain of the mind. I ordered generals and commanders to rest their hands on their swords beside their urban units; I levied soldiers to raise knives and form battle arrays. Piercing the void and blocking the distance, smoke flew and fog gathered. Every one of them had a heroic spirit piercing the heavens, exhaling clouds of delusion at the limit of reality, their high winds shocking the earth, startling waves of dust in the sea of nature. Striking the official army of the factors of awakening, in the frosty night bamboo leaves unfurled. Once the single mind was submerged, the return to the source became ever more distant; once the six loves caught fire, the mansion burned all the fiercer. Crisscrossing, we sheared and plundered, surrounding and punishing both front and rear. With the six wonders and three strategies already harboured in our breasts, over a hundred paces and a thousand glories there was originally no transverse battle-line. Thereupon the clouds dispersed and the mists rolled away; our Way flourished! Thereupon we distributed offices and established duties, carrying out our transformation:
