5.37

禮者忠信之薄。而亂之首。前識者道之華。而愚之始。是以大丈夫處其厚不處其薄。處其實不處其華也。

'Ritual is the thinning of loyalty and good faith, and the beginning of chaos. Foreknowledge is the flower of the Way, and the beginning of folly. Therefore, the great man abides in the substantial and not in the thin; he abides in the fruit and not in the flower.'
