6.44

渤海人。才術不能自給。齊不仕之。著高才不遇傳。以自況也。上書言。佛法詭誑。避役者以為林藪。又詆訶淫蕩。有尼有優婆夷。實是僧之妻妾。損胎殺子其狀難言。今僧尼二百許萬。并俗女向有四百餘萬。六月一損胎。如是則年族二百萬戶矣。驗此佛是疫胎之鬼也。全非聖人。亦言道士。非老莊之本。藉佛邪說為其配坐而已。詳晝此言。殊塵聽視。專言墮胎殺子。豈是正士言哉。孔子見人一善而忘其百非。鮑生見人一惡而終身不忘。弘隘之迹斷可知矣。狂哲之心相去遠矣。然則天下高尚沙門有逾百萬。財色不顧名位莫緣。斯德隱之妄張婬殺。一年誅二子。沙門且然。一歲有二男。編戶誰是。吐言孟浪未足廣之。而奕重為正諫。及後上事還陳此略。考校則劉晝之門人矣。

A native of Bohai. His talent and arts could not sustain him. The Qi did not employ him in office. He wrote the *Account of High Talent Meeting No Opportunity* to liken unto himself. He submitted a memorial stating: 'The Buddhist Dharma is deceitful, serving as a forest thicket for those evading corvée. Furthermore, it is licentious and wanton. There are nuns and upāsikās who are actually the wives and concubines of monks. The situation of aborting fetuses and killing children is difficult to speak of. Now there are about two million monks and nuns, and together with secular women there are nearly over four million. Aborting a fetus once every six months, in this way, there would be two million households eliminated in a year! Verifying this, the Buddha is a ghost that blights fetuses; he is entirely not a sage.' He also stated: 'Daoist priests do not follow the original intent of Laozi and Zhuangzi, but merely rely on the heterodox theories of Buddhism to accompany them.' Examining these words of Zhou, they greatly defile hearing and sight. Exclusively speaking of aborting fetuses and killing children, how can these be the words of an upright scholar? Confucius, seeing a single good deed in a person, forgot their hundred faults; Bao Shuya, seeing a single evil deed in a person, did not forget it for the rest of his life. The traces of breadth and narrowness can clearly be known; the minds of the madman and the wise man are far apart! Moreover, the lofty and noble śramaṇas under Heaven exceed one million; they pay no heed to wealth and sensual desire, and pursue neither fame nor position. Concealing this virtue, he recklessly trumpeted licentiousness and murder. Slaying two children in a single year—even if monks were like this, which registered household has two boys in one year? Uttering such reckless words is not worth expanding upon. Yet [Fu] Yi took it again as an upright remonstrance, and when later submitting memorials he also presented this summary. When investigated, he is simply Liu Zhou's disciple!
