8.38

問。孔子問禮於老聃。則師資之義存矣。又論語。孔子自稱。吾述而不作。信而好古。竊比於我老彭。子云孔聖而云老賢比類之義義將焉在。褒貶乖衷諒為侮聖。

The questioner asks: Confucius inquired about ritual from Lao Dan, so the relationship of master and disciple existed. Furthermore, in the Analects, Confucius said of himself: 'I transmit but do not innovate; I am faithful to and love antiquity, privately comparing myself to our Old Peng.' You call Confucius a sage while calling Laozi a worthy; where is the logic of this comparison? To praise or blame contrary to propriety is surely an insult to the sage.
