Your servant laughs, saying: This is merely altering the 'wisdom of the Buddha' from the Lotus Sutra into the 'wisdom of the Dao.' All the rest is similarly drawn from various texts in more than one instance. Formerly, someone questioned the Daoist Gu Huan, and Huan answered: 'The grand celestial characters of the Lingbao miao jing came forth from spontaneity; they were originally not the Lotus Sutra. It was Kumārajīva who rashly, together with Sengzhao, altered our Daoist scripture into the Lotus Sutra.' Now, that the Lingbao scripture plagiarized the Lotus Sutra could deceive people in the Eastern Xia, but that the Lotus Sutra differs from the Lingbao scripture is identical in the Western Regions; what modern translators produce does not diverge from the scripture texts. Inferring from this, we know that plagiarizing and altering it is the truth. Moreover, the Buddhist sutras are broad yet concise, their words and meanings vast and profound; among their thousand fascicles and hundred divisions there are no repeated texts. They are not like the Laojun scriptures, which possess no independent ideas of their own and rely entirely upon Buddhist sutras to expand their fascicles and divisions. Furthermore, in the five thousand words [of the Daodejing] there is nothing concerning the Buddha at all, nor do the eight treasuries of the Buddha discuss the Dao. All other later writings simply steal from Buddhist sutras. This will be made clear later; I will not expand on these categories now. For this reason, worthy and prominent figures from ancient times have chanted Buddhist sutras, transmitting them down to the present day without break across the generations. If the Daoist methods are truly superior, why do people not chant and uphold them? Looking across the entire realm, who is there that recites the Dao? Therefore, we know it cannot be taken as a standard.
