Your servant laughs, saying: Xiujing was a person of Emperor Ming's time in the Song dynasty; in the seventh year of the Taishi era, he submitted the scripture catalogue pursuant to an imperial decree. Since they were said to be concealed in the celestial palace, in the more than one hundred years since then, we have not heard of celestials descending, nor have we seen Daoist priests ascending. Whence did these scriptures arrive here? Formerly, Wencheng fed a writing to an ox, falsely claiming it was the command of the Queen Mother; and the Huangting and Yuanyang scriptures substituted the Dao for the Buddha. Zhang Ling fabricated the Lingbao scriptures, which only first appeared during the Chiwu era of the Wu dynasty. Shangqing arose with Ge Xuan, and only began to circulate between the Song and Qi dynasties. Bao Jing fabricated the Sanhuang scriptures, and when the affair was exposed he was executed. Wencheng's writing fed to an ox brought about his slaughter during the Han dynasty. Do today's scholars again tread in their footsteps? How pitiable! The Han shu states that Zhang Lu's grandfather, Ling, during the reign of Emperor Huan fabricated talismanic writings to delude the masses; those who received the Dao paid five pecks of rice, so the common people called them 'rice bandits.' Ling transmitted it to his son Heng, and Heng transmitted it to his son Lu; they were called the 'Three Masters.' The wives of the three men were called the 'Three Madams.' All were said to have 'ascended to heaven in broad daylight.' Those who first received the Dao were called 'demon soldiers,' and later were titled 'libationers.' These are the utmost depths of vulgar deceit, forced contrivance, and unauthorized practice—all belong to this category.
