Your servant laughs and says: In the barbarian language, namo means "taking refuge" and also means "save me". In the barbarian language, upāsaka means "virtuous, faithful layman"; upāsikā means "virtuous, faithful laywoman". If, because Laozi said that the Buddha arose in the south, one therefore calls it nanwu fo ("South-none Buddha"), then had he arisen in the west, could one call it xiwu fo ("West-none Buddha")? If one says that men guarding the pass can be named youse ("worried about the pass"), and women worrying about their husbands and fearing barbarians can be named youyi ("worried about barbarians"), then as for po, could it be that they also worry about their grandmothers? Explaining words and glossing terms according to Chinese characters in this manner is crude, clumsy, helpless, and shameful, and exceedingly laughable.
