The Scripture of Converting the Barbarians says: “The Buddha arose in the barbarian regions. The metal qi of the western regions is rigid and devoid of ritual propriety. The scholars of the Divine Continent imitated his rituals and regulations, erecting and establishing pagodas. Everywhere they exclusively esteem turning one’s back on the root to pursue the branches; his words are roundabout and dissolute, not conforming to the wondrous Dao. They adorn and carve scriptures and images to deceive princes and ministers, causing floods, droughts, wars, and mutual strife throughout all under Heaven. Within no more than ten years, disasters and portents arise everywhere: the five stars lose their courses, mountains and rivers collapse and dry up. That the royal transformation is unsettled is entirely due to the disorder wrought by the Buddha. Rulers do not serve the ancestral temples, and the common people do not make offerings to their ancestors. Hence, the spiritual deities and the Dao's qi can no longer be put in order.”
