The decree said: "One who clings to subjective sentiments cannot yet discuss the Way; one of petty wisdom can hardly converse on truth. Thus, how could a fish in a shallow well know the depth and breadth of the Eastern Sea? When swallows and sparrows flit along hedges, how could they envy the soaring of the peng and the phoenix? All such cases cling stubbornly to the petty and so contravene the great orientation; they keep strictly to the letter and so harm the pervasive path. If I regard things through myself, there is nothing that is not myself. If things regard me through themselves, there is no self that is not a thing. Since I am no different from things, how then could things be different from me? When self and things are both forgotten, self and other are uniform as one. For one whose mind is open and empty, there are no things that are not identical; for one who leaves achievements behind, there is nothing that is inadmissible."
