The Separate Biography of the Daoist Zhang Ling says: 'Ling, in the Huming Mountains, made offerings to a golden image and recited Buddhist scriptures.' The Shengxuan jing also says: 'The Tathāgata of the eastern direction dispatched the Mahāsattva Shansheng to go to the Supreme One and say: "The Tathāgata has heard that you are preaching the Dharma for Zhang Ling; therefore he sent me to come look at you." He said to Zhang Ling: "Follow me to the Buddha's place; I shall cause you to see what you have never seen and hear what you have never heard." Ling then bowed to the Mahāsattva and followed him to the Buddha's place.'
