The external treatise says: The wondrous marks of the sages were originally distinct from ordinary men: some had eight colors and double pupils, river-like eyes and sea-like mouths, dragon countenances and crane-like gaits, overturned foreheads and extraordinary moles. As for curly hair and green irises, these are the original features of barbarians; high noses and deep-set eyes are the common appearance of the Hu people. How could these be matched against our sages and taken as extraordinary marks? If one obtains this retribution by serving the Buddha, gentlemen and ladies of the Central Plains would instead turn into Hu appearances. This is the eighth distinction in marks and characteristics.
