The miraculous stupas and auspicious images described above open the minds of the worldly and guide ordinary mortals. Those who do not yet deeply understand are led thereby to produce faith. Once they have faith in these extraordinary appearances, only then can they restrain their minds; opening the scriptures and discussing them, they are aided in awakening divine understanding. Only then do they realize that the four Māras constantly agitate and the six thieves perpetually assail them. Becoming aware and fearful, the day of their transcendence is at hand. Otherwise, sinking down, they remain just as they were from the beginningless past. Could the path of expanding and clarifying [the Dharma] be anything other than this? As for scripture scrolls that do not burn to ash, they match the cloth washed in fire; writing in the air that remains unwetted is just like the wonder of the heavenly canopy. Holy temples are repeatedly set forth, their bell-tones spreading far and wide; divine monks frequently manifest, receiving offerings from both clergy and laity. Such ways are numerous, fully detailed in the Gantong ji.
